The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan:
«I learnt with profound sorrow of the latest vile attack on defenceless citizens perpetrated last night in the city of Istanbul and, on behalf of myself and of the Italian people, I would like to convey to you my sentiments of grief and my deepest sympathy.
Fundamentalist terrorism has once again directed its destructive fury with the aim of claiming as many defenceless lives as possible and of threatening the tranquillity of each one of us, in every Country, in every place.
Italy stands by Turkey, in the profound awareness that it is necessary to continue combating the barbarity of terrorism with the required firmness and also by continuously affirming, in all possible contexts, the value of liberty and the rule of law, two founding values of democratic coexistence and cohesion that fundamentalism aims to disrupt.
It is with these sentiments that I renew to you, Mr President, to the families of the victims and to the persons injured – to whom I wish a prompt and complete recovery – the heartfelt solidarity of all of Italy».
