The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement for World Refugee Day:
«The recurrence of World Refugee Day offers the opportunity to ponder over the drama of thousands of men, women and children who are obliged to flee from wars and extremely critical crisis scenarios.
Our attention and thoughts must firstly focus on the many people who reach our coasts every day.
Migrant and refugee flows are a daily reality, and no longer occasional or exceptional events originating from passing crises. Therefore, our approach must be able to overcome the emergency phase and to elaborate, as we are already doing, ever-more effective and long-term structural responses. This requires firm commitment and untiring work, knowing that it will not be improvised interventions that will be capable to uproot the causes that drive so many people to flee.
Instead, we need strategic, far-sighted and well-tapered decisions, aimed at preventing conflicts, stabilising the regions of the world that are most at risk, and combating the dramatic consequences of climate change; decisions that concern the whole international community; decisions that although aimed at assuring the albeit essential aid-giving moment, might be capable of combating the reasons of conflict and the deeper-lying reasons of the exodus.
Refugee flows are a global phenomenon whose effects go well beyond the Countries directly involved. It is therefore essential that, in a logic of shared responsibility among all the members of the international community, we prove capable of showing our commitment in favour of this so important segment of humanity, in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity. It is not only a question of sharing out the burden of reception but of shouldering the responsibility of managing migration flows at global level.
Within this context, Italy is aware of its role and of what has been achieved thanks to the work of so many of our fellow-citizens - sometimes in conditions of extreme difficulty and at the cost of self-sacrifice - to rescue human lives and to give shelter to refugees, who are entitled to protection under international laws.
The Refugee Day that we are celebrating today spurs us to underscore the consistency of Italy's initiatives on the matter with the values of our Republican Constitution, far from taking approaches of indifference, if not hostility, towards the victims of human tragedies that are unfolding at the confines of Europe».
