Quirinale Palace 01/06/2017
Present here are the top-ranking institutional authorities and I join them in addressing a very cordial greeting to the Ambassadors accredited to our Country.
Tomorrow - 2 June - Italy celebrates Republic Day. Inviting the Diplomatic Corps to a concert on this occasion expresses the spirit of openness and friendship that Italy harbours for all the Countries in the world.
The Italian Republic was established seventy-one years ago as a sign of the repudiation of violence and in defence of liberty.
With these principles in mind, our thoughts again go to the victims of terrorism, recent and less so, both Italian and of every other Country and continent of the world.
To them, to the memory of the victims of terrorism, whatever their nationality, ethnic group or religion, allow me to dedicate this concert.
Shortly, Maestro Giovanni Sollima and the Solisti Aquilani - to whom I express my heartfelt thanks - will offer us moments of magnificent music. Their concert intends to represent a message of peace and serenity from Italy.
We must unite to strengthen the common front against the preaching of violence and to combat those who unrelentingly turn themselves into an instrument of death.
The recent Taormina Declaration - issuing from the G7 Summit - on fighting terrorism and violent extremism shows how cooperation by the international community has grown in this respect.
Any challenge, any big challenge, that the international community is faced with requires great cooperation.
Interdependence is the increasingly fitting condition of this historical period.
There is interdependence and the need to cooperate on the overwhelming migration phenomenon that has been taking place in the last few years in so many parts of the world; a phenomenon that requires an incessant effort to save human lives, a fair division of the costs of receiving migrants, utmost firmness and determination against all forms of human trafficking, committing to help the Countries of origin and transit of migration flows.
Interdependence and cooperation are also implicated in preventing and tackling major financial crises and assuring economic stability and in promoting global development.
There is interdependence and the need to cooperate also in protecting that great common heritage that consists of the environment and the climate of the Earth on which we live.
Knowing that one destiny unites all the people of the world has led to taking important decisions over time.
In four days' time, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Marshall Plan with which the United States came to the rescue of the European Countries that were devastated by years of war on their lands. That was a great and far-sighted choice of openness and cooperation.
In this interdependence-based period of history, the historic validity of European integration is being increasingly confirmed. The Union solemnly reaffirmed it just two months ago here in Rome. Equally important and significant is the growing cooperation between the European Union and the other large areas of the world, large countries or regionally integrated areas.
Overcoming barriers stimulates the economy, encourages cooperation, strengthens peace and security.
In the course of the year that has just elapsed, at the occurrence of the earthquakes that repeatedly struck our central regions, we saw the capacity of solidarity, of showing solidarity, of many European countries and of other continents.
Many were the solidarity-driven initiatives to provide support that Italy greatly appreciated and for which it is grateful.
Allow me to dedicate a thought to commemorate the victims of the earthquake and to express my commitment to support our fellow-citizens who are still in distress. We will also meet their Mayors at the reception that will soon take place in the gardens of the Quirinale Palace.
Italy has a consistent capacity of tackling big hurdles. In the face of great difficulty, Italy has always managed to find the capacity to join efforts in order to muster the energy and resources needed to overcome the difficulties.
Allow me to address a greeting to those who are following us on television.
And let me thank the Ambassadors for having accepted our invitation.
Enjoy the Concert.
