The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has issued the following statement:
«World Food Day is a chance to multiply efforts to “end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”, as stated in the sustainable development objective number 2 of Agenda 2030. This is a commitment we have undertaken at the highest international level, an imperative of justice and fairness which we cannot fail to fulfill.
For many people, and especially for the most vulnerable segments of the population, an increase in food insecurity is certainly one of the worst consequences of climate change, which has devastating effects in terms of famine, crisis and conflict, and is responsible for the alarming condition of our planet.
The elimination of the scourge of hunger from the world is an ambitious but achievable goal. Achieving this goal requires strengthening policies - including adequate investment in research and innovation - for the maintenance and sustainable use of natural resources, battling desertification with courageous and innovative initiatives, preserving food systems that respect the balance of ecosystems, and tackling food waste without hesitation.
The subject of the Day, “Our actions are our future. Healthy diets for a #zerohunger world”, reminds everyone that our daily choices are important to ensure food for all and to pursue the goal of a world where everyone can escape hunger and destitution.
Therefore, I confirm Italy's support and gratitude to all those who daily work to achieve the objectives of sustainable development, and in particular to spread a positive food and lifestyle culture».
