The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has issued the following statement on the occasion of the Universal Children’s Day:
«The United Nations General Assembly approved 30 years ago the Convention on the Rights of the Child, acknowledging the human rights of children, young people and kids, the need for adequate policies and measures to protect their vulnerability and promote their growth. Thanks to this, the living conditions of children and young people in the world and in our country have improved significantly.
However, there’s still much to be done for children living in difficult or fragile situations and in implementing basic rights in a changing world.
We can’t lower our danger level in the protection of children victims of armed conflicts, who belong to minorities and who need specific protection and support for their life situations or physical conditions.
A society's progress index is measured by the way it protects children and by the resources and choices it dedicates to them. In this context, the very future of society is at stake».
