The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the President of the National AVIS (Italian Blood Donors' Association), Gianpietro Briola:
"On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day 2021, I would like to extend a warm greeting to the organizers and participants of this event promoted by the Italian Blood Donors' Association, who are constantly engaged in raising awareness on blood donations.
The chosen theme "Donate blood and make the world's heart beat" is dedicated to those who generously and responsibly contribute to spreading the culture of "donating". My thoughts go to all the women and men, and especially the young people who, through their blood donation, convey a message of sharing and solidarity.
Such an important event gives us the chance to reflect upon and bolster the founding values of our society at a global level. Especially in times of pandemic, the need to protect life, health and the rights of the community has become a global emergency. However, the events that have changed our lives in the last year have not stopped the widespread and invaluable work of donors and volunteer associations which, despite the difficulties, are committed to guaranteeing the therapies and life-saving interventions that would not have been possible without blood donations.
As I renew my appreciation for the initiative and constant daily commitment at the service of the most vulnerable, I wanted to convey my best wishes for a job well done".
