The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of World Refugee Day, has issued the following statement:
«International law protects people who are forced to leave their homes and countries because of conflict, persecution, weather conditions, natural disasters and famine.
According to the UN High Commissioner, more than 80 million people are on the run, who, to date, is protecting nearly 100 million individuals.
This Day calls for reflection to ensure that this international responsibility is effectively fulfilled.
The stories of individuals and peoples, even those with geographical proximity, appeal to our sense of solidarity, firmly attached to high moral and legal obligations.
The protection of human life, the rescue of refugees, support for those suffering in humanitarian crises and the reception of the most vulnerable are commitments that the Italian Republic, in cooperation with the European Union and international organisations, has never shirked, not even in recent times affected by the pandemic.
I would like to sincerely thank the men and women of the various administrations who ensure the daily efficiency of international protection with dedication and spirit of service.
I would also like to mention the generosity of private citizens, civil society organisations and religious institutions in assisting refugees in our country, also promoting innovative experiences such as the humanitarian corridors, a significant example of hospitality at European level.»
