The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has issued the following statement:
"The 70th anniversary of United Nations Day, that was established in 1948 to celebrate the coming into force of the Charter of the United Nations three years earlier, marks the invaluable contribution of the UN to international peacekeeping and security, to the protection of human rights and to the promotion of cooperation among the states.
Throughout the years, the commitment of the UN and of its specialised agencies to achieve the high objectives set by the Charter, while facing the ardous events that took place during those decades, has confirmed the foresight of its founders and its own continuing topicality.
Now, more than ever, our globalised world feels the necessity of a planetary open forum where the voices of every state may be equally heard.
The universality of the UN is the key to its success and the secret to its vitality.
Without the contribution of the United Nations, which stands as the guarantee of a truly shared commitment, the international community would be unable to address the complex challenges of our time. The resulting effects on instability and conflicts would be ever more serious.
Italy, by ensuring its historical support for the actions of the UN and with the conviction that benefits ensue from multilateralism, renews its commitment at the forefront of peacekeeping operations, in developing policies for the reduction of poverty and hunger in the world and in implementing courageous initiatives to protect and promote human rights, with the aim of building, together with the rest of the international community, a future of endless opportunities for the younger generation."
