The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, had a telephone conversation in which they expressed strong concern about the climate emergency that is affecting the Mediterranean region with particular violence. President Sakellaropoulou, thanking for sending air assets to deal with the fires affecting Greece, stressed the need for a joint initiative by Southern European countries to address climate risks in the Mediterranean. President Mattarella, after expressing his support and mentioning that Italy is also facing serious consequences due to climate change, responded positively to the proposal. Greece and Italy can create a common front to raise awareness among the European Union, other Mediterranean countries and the entire international community to act faster and more effectively to counter the effects of the climate crisis.
The two Presidents therefore agreed to work together to raise awareness and engage their counterparts in European Mediterranean countries.
