The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden:
«Having learned of the news of the demise of former President Jimmy Carter, allow me to convey to you, Mr. President, to the Carter family and to the people of the United States, the Italian Republic’s and my personal most heartfelt condolences.
An entrepreneur and politician deeply bound to his native Georgia, Jimmy Carter represented a figure capable of sincerely identifying with the most authentic values of American democracy.
With him disappears a figure that courageously pursued the road to peace and to the assertion of human rights, both during his presidential mandate and across the following decades. It is not by chance that, to consolidate the important diplomatic successes that he achieved during his years at the White House, in 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of the highly meaningful ethical and political commitment that he expressed through the Carter Center.
In memory of the 39th President of the United States of America and looking forward to receiving you soon in Rome, I extend to you and to the American people my sincerest condolences».
