Declaration by President Mattarella on the 25th anniversary of World Biodiversity Day

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement:

«On the 25th anniversary of the International Day for Biological Diversity established by the United Nations, note should be taken of the numerous common international actions taken to effectively combat the loss of collective capital of inestimable worth represented by biodiversity.

Its value must be included in every social, economic and cultural context as well as within the 2030 Agenda, with a forward-looking vision.

Biodiversity constitutes a value in assuring environmental balance and social justice, wellbeing and the availability of resources (water, food and clean air), and in preserving the models of life of local communities and valorising traditional uses and knowledge.

Fighting the deterioration of the climate and desertification and the strategies aimed at adjusting to and combating environmental risks - the virtuous paradigms of the circular economy - find key allies in the conservation and valorisation of biodiversity.

Italy's extraordinary heritage of natural diversity, a key element of environmental interconnection in the Mediterranean Basin, is to be preserved and valorised through the implementation of the national strategy for biodiversity, in the growing collective awareness of its irreproducible and vital value. »
