The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has sent the following message to the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron:
"It is with profound dismay that I received the news regarding the barbaric act of violence that struck the Strasbourg Christmas market.
By condemning what occurred last night, we are thinking with deep sympathy of those who were injured, to whom we wish a quick and full recovery. We are close to France as we express our condolences, being firmly determined to defend such fundamental values of freedom and pluralism that characterise our democratic societies".
