The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, issued the following communiqué:
«The fierce propaganda of Islamic fundamentalists has once again found an insane perpetrator who has very harshly struck all of Europe through our friend, the nation of France, on the day of its National Holiday.
I extend to the people of Nice and to the French authorities the solidarity of the Italian Republic. The horror and grief of France are our own horror and grief. The people who died in Nice, whatever their nationality, are our own dead.
Together with all the Countries of the international community, and especially of the European Union, we will persist in our commitment to combat violence and terrorism in order to affirm the values of liberty, equality, fraternity that are celebrated in France on the 14th of July. We will never surrender to those who preach and practice the culture of death against the lives of individuals and the liberty of peoples».
