The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovič Putin, the following message:
"To my great dismay, I learnt of the explosion that only a few moments ago claimed the lives of innocent victims among the people riding the subway in St. Petersburg, leaving many others injured.
I am following the unfolding of this tragic event with apprehension. On behalf of myself and of all the Italian people, I wish to express to you and to our friend, the Russian people, our deep-felt condolences. Italy wishes to express its most compassionate closeness to the families of all the victims and of those injured, to whom we wish a prompt recovery.
In anticipation of our meeting in Moscow, I would like to convey to you my sincerest condolences and the expressions of friendship for your Country."
