The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the Governor- General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sam Mostyn:
«I was appalled to learn the tragic news of the shooting that took place at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
In these moments of deep sadness, on behalf of the Republic of Italy, allow me to express heartfelt condolences and the deepest sympathy to the families of the victims.
The thoughts of all Italians, and mine personally, are also directed to all the people wounded, to whom I wish a prompt and full recovery.
Whatever might be the causes and responsibilities of this vile shooting, allow me to reaffirm my harshest expressions of condemnation against despicable acts of terrorism, repulsive manifestations and forms of antisemitism, and any expression of fanatical violence fuelled by ethnic or religious hatred. »
