The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali:
“I wish to convey my most sincere congratulations for the important recognition that has been conferred upon you.
Italy looks on with great admiration and deep interest at the turning point that you, Mr. Prime Minister, have brought to regional dynamics. With great courage and vision it has reopened a dialogue with Eritrea and laid the foundations for a process of regional integration that also includes Somalia. This initiative is a herald of hope to millions, creating new prospects for the future, particularly for the younger generations in Ethiopia and neighbouring countries.
Ethiopia is a strategic partner for us. Italy knows and greatly respects its international commitment, the essential role it plays in ensuring regional stability and the outstanding aid it has provided to displaced persons and refugees.
In the happy memory of our meeting at the Quirinale in January, on behalf of Italy, I renew my fervent wishes on this day that is so meaningful for Ethiopia, for the Horn of Africa and for the entire African continent, reaffirming our continued and steadfast support of your actions for peace and reconciliation.”
