Communiqué
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has sent the following message to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland:
"I am deeply saddened and shocked by the news of the attack suffered by the city of London a few hours ago, in one of the most symbolic centres of British democracy.
Yet again, the odious and senseless violence of terrorism has struck the United Kingdom in a futile attempt to undermine the values of freedom, openness and tolerance that European society has made the cornerstone of civil coexistence. This irrefutable principle is one of the most characteristic features of cities, which, like London, welcome citizens and visitors from different cultures.
The United Kingdom can count on the firm commitment of Italy in the fight against all forms of terrorism, in the knowledge that international collaboration will continue to be an essential tool for effectively opposing violence and intolerance.
Your Majesty, it is in this spirit that, on behalf of the Italian people, I should like to express my sympathy and support for the families of the victims, the many injured and to our friends the British people".
