Message from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to the President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump to celebrate the 4th of July, Independence Day

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent the following message to the President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump:

«This year, the 4th of July takes on a special meaning for the United States of America, as it marks the 250th anniversary of their independence. I would therefore like to extend our warmest wishes – mine personal and on behalf of the Republic of Italy – to our friends the American people.

Today’s celebration belongs to the history of the United States but, over time, it has become common heritage for all of those who identify with the principles of liberty, democratic representation and the protection of universal human rights, as well as the pursuit of a decent and happy life. These founding ideals, enshrined in the Declaration of Independence of 1776, have inspired the political and civil advancement of the United States, as of many other populations in every continent. Moreover, these noble sources of inspiration have represented and remain the focus of a vision of inter-State relations shaped on the rule of law, cooperation, and the support of international institutions born from the rejection of the tragedies that marked the last century.

In a historical juncture characterized by unprecedented challenges for humankind, it is essential that Washington and Rome – also within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance and through the United Nations and other multilateral fora – continue to work together in the pursuit of peace, security and prosperity for their respective people and for the entire world.

It is with these feelings, Mr. President, that I renew my very best wishes to all the citizens of the United States of America in this milestone anniversary. »
