The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement tomark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia:
«Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia constitute a persisting insufferable social scourge and the cause of intolerable discrimination and violence that, in some areas of the world, is even legitimated by laws that trample on individual rights.
Since 2007, when the European Parliament established the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, the sensitivities on these themes of the collective conscience have sharpened. Actions to combat the numerous episodes of violence that are continuously recorded in the news cannot stop.
We must call for a unanimous condemnation of all manifestations of intolerance arising from the ignorance of the value of every person.
It is the duty of Institutions to develop effective prevention strategies aimed at educating people to respect the diversity of others and towards inclusion.
Abuse, violence, and intolerance infringe upon the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Italian Constitutions which, precisely under Article 3, confers equal social dignity to all citizens, with no distinction of sex, and assures the full development of the human individual. »
