The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement to mark the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development:
«Voluntary work represents a valuable resource for the social cohesion of communities.
We are faced with challenges whose scope is increasingly broader, and the action of volunteers represents an effective element to tackle scenarios that make our societies frailer.
Voluntary work is the generous expression of the obligation of economic and social solidarity enshrined in our Constitution.
As is also affirmed by the United Nations, the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals requires a contribution by all people who, through their voluntary work, “become part of the solution”.
The commitment to improve contemporary societies, which characterizes the many forms of voluntary associations, restores hope and gives prospects of rebirth even in situations of adversity and calamity.
The Republic is grateful for the work of volunteers who, through an admirable spirit of altruism and collaboration, provide their priceless support on a day-to-day basis ».
