Statement by President Mattarella to mark World Mental Health Day

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement:

«Living with a mental disorder obliges us to overcome difficulties in our studies, jobs and relationships on a daily basis: difficulties that are made even harder by social bias and exclusion, fruit of a culture that still struggles to understand malaise and disease. Promoting prevention, assuring high-quality care and fostering active participation processes means protecting the general welfare.

The theme chosen for World Mental Health Day 2025 is dedicated to psychological well-being in situations of conflict, natural disasters and emergencies and reminds us that what goes on in the world has deep and lasting consequences that can mark people and communities for many years. In situations such as these, one person out of five develops a mental disorder. Mental health – as was recalled in the Paris Declaration, which was also adopted by our Country last June – urges us to share responsibility and go beyond the vision that reduces it to an exclusively health-related issue.

Taking care of our mental health is not a secondary need but a fundamental right that goes to reinforce the pillars of our coexistence».
