Statement by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the "International Volunteer Day”
The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella issued the following statement on the occasion of the "International Volunteer Day”:
"On this day I would like to convey my sincere gratitude to the world of volunteerism and to the Non-profit Sector, for the support they are providing to the community that has been deeply affected by the pandemic.
In recent months, volunteers have diligently and altruistically played a vital role, spontaneously dedicating their time to those in distress. Volunteers have often sacrificed their own health, in some cases even losing their lives, in order to aid and be close to the suffering, the weak and those in need.
The pandemic has brought to light social and economic frailties. Measures taken in an attempt to slow the spread of the pandemic have changed the way we live, but the work carried out by volunteers, with great courage and self-denial, continues to bring comfort to the most vulnerable categories.
Volunteerism is a long-held practice in our country, an important driving force of solidarity and has, in synergy with the territories, been the driving force behind a profound social change that has improved the quality of life of the community.
Supporting volunteerism and facilitating the participation of our young people in this sector is conducive to raising responsible citizens who are able to face local and global challenges, contributing through inclusion to the creation of an increasingly equitable and prejudice-free society, wherein values such as generosity and altruism are bolstered."
