The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:
«Asserting the rights of persons with disabilities is the yardstick of the level of advancement of a people.
This day offers the opportunity to evaluate the progress that the Republic has made up to now in applying the principle of the equality of citizens enshrined in the Constitution.
The 2006 United Nations Convention laid the ground for a new approach by recognizing that communities are too often late in embracing diversity.
The reform of the condition of disability in Italy, with a focus on leading an independent life, customized projects and inclusion in the workplace, represents a valuable opportunity to build a more equitable society, respectful of the dignity of every individual.
Its implementation will require constant commitment and tight coordination between the various institutional levels and civil society, with the direct participation of the persons with disabilities.
“Nothing about us without us” is the founding principle that expresses the idea that no decision regarding the life of persons with disabilities can be taken without their consent.
Inclusion thrives on daily choices based on the capacity to leverage the talents and aspirations of every individual. »
