The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, released the following statement to mark World Refugee Day:
«The tragic developments on the international scenario, with the spreading outbreak of wars and crises and the consequences of ever more frequent extreme weather events, remind us of the drama of refugees on a daily basis.
The Republic of Italy ensures their protection through a multilateral approach based on the principle of the responsibility of States and respect for the dignity of human beings. Our Country is unwaveringly committed to promoting innovative instruments, such as humanitarian and labour corridors.
It is an international obligation and a moral duty of solidarity that is compliant with our Constitutional principles.
In celebrating World Refugee Day, allow me to underscore the need that the International Community tackle the deep-set causes of forced migration, thus putting in place the conditions whereby no individuals ever be obliged to flee from their Country in order to protect their lives and fundamental rights.
This global challenge requires the active involvement of civil society as well as of Institutions and international organizations. Religious and third sector organisations, the private sector and often also single citizens play a praiseworthy role in favour of integrating refugees that deserves our sincerest appreciation. »
